Since 1899 Grandma Wild’s bakery has been producing great tasting biscuits. Using only the finest ingredients and following original recipes this flourishing business bakes and supplies confectionery under the Grandma Wild brand and for private labels including major private labels and luxury brands.
Grandma Wild’s biscuits are gifting products and have traditionally been supplied in attractive souvenir tins. The marketing team wanted to extend their range including a selection of novelty products whilst maintaining the high-quality look and feel of the packaging. A demanding print and finishing specification was developed including pantone special colours and mandatory supplier BRC Food Standard Accreditation.
Grandma Wild turned to another Yorkshire company to help them. With impressive print and in-house finishing capabilities the team at Herbert Walkers firstly produced a prototype folding boxboard carton. Deep, chunky embossing was added to give the packaging a tin-type look and feel.
The creative team then went a step further and developed a series of two-dimensional ideas into a three-dimensional campervan, gingerbread man and Christmas pudding. Plain samples were made by the pre-press team to make sure they were functionally sound and then printed and embossed samples were produced on the platen presses.
Steve Holme explains the benefits of Herbert Walker’s extensive finishing capability. “Our business has been designed to take a creative idea and make it into functional packaging that is appealing to the eye. Our clients benefit from seeing printed, foiled and embossed prototypes before going into volume production. As all these processes are completed in-house it’s a quick and it’s cost effective.”
The new deeply embossed folding boxboard cartons are now used on specialist gifting lines including for a major retailer’s christmas ranges and other seasonal ranges including Valentine’s and Mother’s Day.
Impressed with the print and finishing quality, Aldi has gone a stage further and replaced a pantone gold with gold foiling on the Specially Selected chocolate biscuit packaging to further elevate the range.
The novelty range has been a big hit with customers and Grandma Wild is planning to repeat the range.
